A Love Of The Ages

At 10 years old, Love wore a backwards baseball cap
His hair was long and his hands dirty with tetherball victories
His jeans were loose and his shoes were made for running
His smile was bright with ambition and his eyes begged for competition
He touched me with a flirty tug
Our hearts were eager with play

At 12 years old, Love wore a backwards baseball cap
His hair was shorter now and his palms were sweaty with the nerves of adolescence
His skinny jeans clung tight and his shoes bled skateboard torn holes
His smile grew wider and his eyes glowed with wonder
He touched me with a hopeful courage
Our hearts were open and curious

At 14 years old, Love wore a backwards baseball cap
His hair was spiked and his fingers blistered from summer training
His jeans hung loose and his shoes smelled of fresh cut grass
His smile shyed to a smirk and his eyes rested with weary
He touched me with a sweet sanctuary
Our hearts were rewound with joy

At 21 years old, Love wore a backwards baseball cap
His hair returned to its wavy black locks and his hands were coarse with the callous of the years
His jeans turned to slacks and his shoes a hard polish
His smile calmed to a tender passion and his eyes a still knowing
He touched me with a new compassion
Our hearts were full and rich of time

Now, Love wears a backwards baseball cap
He touches me with a fierce gratitude
Our hearts are content with the exchange of seasons

A Love, a Love of the ages
